What you need to know
If you’re at least 16 years old in Massachusetts, you can study and take a written knowledge test to receive your learner’s permit and driver’s license. The test is timed, so you’ll have 25 minutes to answer 25 multiple-choice questions based on the 2024 Massachusetts Driver’s Manual. To pass the knowledge exam and be eligible to receive your permit, you’ll need to answer at least 18 of the questions correctly, giving you a score of 72% or higher. If you’re under 18, you’ll be working for a Junior Operator License once you hold your learner’s permit for six months, finish a driver’s education course, and complete 40 hours of supervised driving. If you’re over 18, you’ll still be required to complete supervised driving hours. The written knowledge exam is offered at your local RMV office and will be $30. At the time of your testing, you will have the option to prepay for your driving test at the same time as your permit test, which is an additional $30. This RMV practice test contains questions based on information directly from the manual and will help you prepare you for the real thing.
